Vietnam is now Southeast Asia’s biggest beer-drinking nation — consuming about 700 million gallons a year. That’s far more than Thailand’s 500-million-gallon consumption and the Philippines’ 400 million.
Vietnam’s 15% growth in drinking elevated the country into the world’s top 25 beer-consuming nations.
Tourists apparently account for a good part of the increase as they join Hanoi locals in drinking light-bodied Bia Hoi, brewed and delivered daily to thousands of corner bars with plastic stools on the sidewalks.
Vietnam now has a wide variety of imported beers as well as local brews — including Larue, Saigon, Huda and Halida — that are bound to continue Vieetnam on the beer-drinking growth trajectory.
