US Solar Panel Investment in Vietnam Postponed

In a setback to American-Vietnam corporate partnership, US-based First Solar —  the world’s largest maker of thin-film solar panels — is postponing manufacturing at its $300 million plant in Ho Chi Minh City until demand improves in the world solar market.  First Solar planned up to a $1 billion investment in Vietnam, one of the largest ever by an American company.

First Solar said it will complete construction of its factory but postpone new hiring and importation of equipment — bad news for Vietnam, which had expected the factory to employ 2,000 workers earning good wages by Vietnamese standards.

The plant is designed to be a model of energy efficiency in a country that is eager to embrace  green technology.
