US Has Finally Confirmed Ambassador to Vietnam

US-Vietnam diplomacy can get back on track now that the US Senate has confirmed career foreign service officer David Bruce Shear as successor to Michael Michalak as ambassador to Vietnam.

Shear was deputy assistant secretary for east Asian and Pacific Affairs and served in Sapporo, Beijing, Tokyo, and Kuala Lumpur over his 30-year career.

The relationship between the US and Vietnam grew dramatically under Michalak’s tenure and now faces a critical period as both countries try to figure out how to deal with China’s aggressiveness in Southeast Asia as well as anxiety in the US of soaring imports from Vietnam.
