Vietnam Supplying Global Fruit Markets

Vietnam increased its exports of vegetables and fruit 33% to $300 so far this year as demand for Vietnamese produce soars in China and Indonesia and countries with strict standards — the US, South Korea, and Japan — buy more varieties of fruit, such as rambutan and dragon fruit.

Vietnam exported 750 tons of dragon fruit to the US alone in the first half of 2011, nearly as much as for all of 2010, and Japan imported 200 tons of dragon fruit, up 70%.

Meanwhile, Vietnam imported $122 million of vegetables and fruits, down 6% and showing that the country is moving toward being a significant supplier for global produce markets.
