Anti-China Protests Gaining Momentum in Vietnam

The Chinese Embassy in Hanoi has been the site of rare demonstrations for three weeks in a row as Vietnamese activists, including prominent pro-democracy dissidents, challenge China’s aggressive posture in claiming ownership of the Spratly and Paracel Island groups in the East (South China) Sea.

This suggests tacit approval by the Vietnamese government that rarely tolerates public demonstrations — and is mobilizing support from the rest of Southeast Asia, Russia, the US, and other countries.  Last week Vietnam conducted live-fire drills in the East Sea not long after China disrupted Vietnam’s oil exploration efforts in the region, which some consider rich enough in resources to be worth fighting for.
