Vietnam Restricting Phone, Wine Imports

Starting June 1, Vietnam is requiring importers of cell phones, wine and beauty products to use the seaports of Haiphong, Danang, and Saigon to bring their products into the country — even though businesses prefer air and land transportation for these products.

Vietnam’s  trade ministry says its new policy will combat fraud and counterfeiters, but importers consider the measure a significant trade barrier — partly because it will quintuple shipping time from a week to more than a month.

A factor in the decision may be that these imported products have contributed to Vietnam’s trade imbalance, increasing 17% so far this year to $2 billion in aggregate value.
