US Solar Panel Maker Investing $300M in Vietnam

American high-tech solar panel maker First Solar — a $13 billion company with  facilities in the U.S., Malaysia, Germany and France — broke ground this month on a $300 million facility in northwestern Ho Chi Minh City.  The factory will employ 600 to make advanced semiconductor technology renewable energy products.

The investment is one of the largest by an American company in Vietnam to date and is in sync with the country’s power generation needs and its emphasis on economic development that is in harmony with environmental and social sustainability.

Some analysts see the move by First Solar, along with the Intel facility that began operating in HCMC last fall, as just the beginning of investments by high-tech American companies in Vietnam.
