A Vietnamese court has sentenced Huynh Ngoc Si to life in prison for receiving $262,000 in bribes from a Japanese road-construction consultancy — another sign that Vietnam is getting serious about changing its business culture that has tolerated corruption. Vietnam has handed down dozens of lengthy jail sentences to corrupt officials in recent years.
Sentencing judges say the case negatively affected Vietnam’s image in the international community and hindered the country’s effort attract foreign capital. Two years ago, four Japanese executives pled guilty in the case in Japan, Vietnam’s biggest donor country.
