Despite Rice Record, Vietnam Regrets Farmland Loss

Vietnam stands to lose 5% percent of its farmland to industry and other development over the next decade, but the government has a plan to preserve more than 9 million acres to grow rice, one of its leading exports.  Provincial authorities have been told not allow new golf courses to take over rice fields or other farmland.

Rice shipments from Vietnam totaled 5.6 million tons in the January-to-September period, 12.3% more than a year earlier, and may reach a record 7.2 million tons this year.  Only Thailand ships more rice to the global market.
