Vietnam has banned advertising of online games and restricted access to the games because some gaming addicts have resorted to robbery to get money to play — including a 15-year-old girl who strangled a 4-year-old to rob her of $10 earrings.
Government officials say the crackdown resulted from public outcry about the negative influence on youngsters. While the government formulates new regulations, Internet service providers have been ordered to cut off Web access after 11 p.m to shops that offer games.
The government has licensed 22 gaming companies and 93 games but is determined to eliminate those with violent and pornographic content. Teenagers form lines in many of the more than 3,000 online game shops in Hanoi.
