Vietnam’s government has launched its own social networking site following allegations that it restricted Facebook and hacked websites with political content. The go.vn site (www.goonline.vn) is the country’s biggest-ever IT project. Go.vn can serve more than four million users at once, and aims to attract up to 50% of social network users by 2015.
About 25% of the population uses uses the Internet in Vietnam, which is outpacing other Asian nations in the development of information and communication technologies. Although critics of Vietnam’s government say restrictions on news media and websites threatened the country’s rapid economic progress (some 25 websites that included political content reportedly have been hacked this year), the government says the new site will not displace other popular social networking sites.
