Freed Vietnamese Dissident Remains Political

Vietnamese dissident lawyer Nguyen Bac Truyen, convicted in 2007 of spreading propaganda against the state and participating in a bomb plot, reportedly has been released this week and plans to continue his political activities.  His was one of the first arrests in a period of tightened political security in recent years.

Truyen was said to have been confined among about 40 political prisoners and said he would continue to promote human rights and a multi—party system.  He is no longer permitted to practice law, and his movements are restricted.  He was a member of Bloc 8406, a group of activists and intellectuals promoting democracy.
