US former trade representative Susan Schwab says Vietnam has the opportunity to double its exports to the US because of improvements in the US trade balance and the overall economy. Vietnamese exports currently account for just over 1% of goods imported into the US, which could increase substantially.
For that to happen, she says, the US and Vietnam need to improve basic differences in bilateral trade relations including anti-dumping measures, subsidies, and control over garment and catfish exports. Vietnamese exporters also need to focus on hygiene and food safety.
Vietnam exported $12 billion in goods to the US last year but faced trade barriers such as anti-dumping laws.
