US Clears Vietnam Fruit Service for American Market

The An Phu Irradiation Joint Stock Company (API) has received certification from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to treat fruit bound for the American market.

API’s irradiation plant is able to sterilize about 30,000 tons of fruit a year. The company will charge about $1 a kilogram for its fruit irradiation service. API expects its main business over the next few years will be treating U.S.-bound dragon fruit, rambutans, lychees and longans.

Nearly 28 tons of Vietnamese dragon fruit was exported to the U.S. in the first half of this year, including 10 tons that was shipped by sea.

The United States his a large and growing market for Vietnamese-fruit exporters.
